The latest creation by Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava was opened in Valencia yesterday.
Called the Assut d’Or, the bridge crosses the old Turia River bed near the City of Arts and Sciences, is 180 metres long and has three lanes of traffic on either side.
Dominating the entire structure is a huge curved mast that points 125 metres into the sky.
Traffic experts predict that the new bridge, which cost €35 million euros to build – 11% over budget – will be used by 70,000 passengers per day.
