Valencia during the Fallas festivals, a unique city

Valencia during the Fallas festivals, a unique city

10 March 2009 535 views No Comment

Spring is just around the corner and Valencia is paying its own special tribute with its Fallas festivals, an event declared to be of International Tourist Interest. Fire, gunpowder, music and colour invade every corner of the city on the River Turia between 15th and 19th March.

Starting on Sunday 15th, with the Plantà, impressive Fallas monuments will line every public square and crossroads in the city of Valencia. The papier-mâché figures or ninots offer a humorous take on topical issues chosen by each of the Fallas committees, competing in wit and beauty, and satirising recent events in political, social and cultural life.

For five days, fireworks, mascletaes and monuments are the protagonists of different cities, where the smell of gunpowder blends with the finest flower scents, sound of music of the bands and the masclets.

On 15th March, at eight o’clock in the morning, the children’s Fallas will be set up; at midnight the rest of the Fallas will take their position and as the climax, a great castle of fireworks will light up the Valencian night sky.

Mascletaes (firecrackers), a floral offering to the Virgen de los Desamparados (Virgin of the Forsaken), bullfights and firework displays are just some of the numerous festive activities that will be taking place in Valencia over these few days.
