Valencia’s biggest festival, Las Fallas, takes place every March with a hectic week of city firecrackers, fireworks and parades in honour of Saint Joseph, attracting around two million people.
The city is adorned with a myriad of papier maché effigies (ninots) – film stars, politicians and anyone of local, national or international notoriety have their space as colourfully lampooned caricature as a 15 or 20 foot model.
Last Fallas 2009 have left the following records:
- 384 commitees have worked hard for the festival
- 96,278 falleros have participated in the parades
- 9,165 musicians have accompanied the falleros
- 53.230 bouquets of flowers and 242 flower baskets for the Flower Offering to Our Lady of the Forsaken
- 772 effigies worth 10,64 millon euros have been burnt on the last day, the Cremà
- 300 firefighters controlled the Cremà throughout all Valencia
- The most expensive figure cost 900,000 euros, which got the first prize
- 4,820 fireworks for the Nit del Foc (Night of Fire)
- The economic impact of Las Fallas has been 752 million euros
