Las Fallas of Valencia, a candidate as a treasure of cultural heritage
Las Fallas in Valencia, Great Week in Bilbao and Corpus Christi in Toledo have been declared on Monday as some of the 10 candidates for the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Spain, according to the initiative developed by the International Bureau of Cultural Capitals (www.ibocc.org), with the desire to promote, educate and safeguard the Spanish intangible cultural heritage.
So far, in addition to the Fallas, the Tribunal de las Aguas of Valencia (Water Court) was also declared a candidate as a Treasure of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Spain. This list includes the Great Week of Bilbao, the Corpus Christi of Toledo, the Filandón of Leon, the legend of the Lizard of Malena of Jaén, Txistu of the Basque Country, the Curpillos festival in Burgos, the tradition of the Virgin del Pilar in Zaragoza, the International Festival in Santander, the Song of the Sibyl in Mallorca, the Biennail of Flamenco in Seville, the Silbo Gomero, the Rapa das Best in Sabucedo, the Sanfermines, the Council of Good Men in Murcia, the Carnival in Cadiz and the Festival of Classical Theatre in Mérida.
Voting for the election of the 10 treasures of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Spain will take place from 15 to June 28, on the website www.ibocc.org.
Intangible cultural heritage is defined by the Convention for the protection of Intangible Heritage of UNESCO as the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge and skills that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage.
