Awarded Jasmina Reza comedy “Art” in Valencia
How would you feel about your best friend if he suddenly did something so colossally stupid, it made you doubt the very basis of the friendship? It happens in Yasmina Reza’s monster international hit, Art, now performed in Teatro Olympia in Valencia.
Art concerns the cataclysmic effect on three friends, Sergio, Marcos, and Ivan, when Sergio purchases an expensive work of abstract art: a large painting consisting of white lines on a white canvas. As the three men engage in an ongoing debate over the value of the painting, emotions run high and the conflict escalates to the point of nearly destroying a long-standing friendship.
“A remarkably wise, witty and intelligent comedy . . . has touched a universal nerve.”–The Times
Art opened in Paris in 1994 and touched a nerve with French audiences used to debating the place of art in life. It was premiered in the UK at the Wyndham’s Theatre in 1996, and the next year won the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best New Comedy.
Popular around the world it has been translated into many languages and also won a Tony award.
