A star-studded line-up for the Valencia Open 500
The first Valencia Open 500 will feature six players from the World’s Top Ten and eleven from the Top Twenty. The tournament will be held at the City of Arts and Sciences from 31st October to 8th November.
With a month and a half still to go before the start of the tournament, the official list of participating players has been announced. The line-up for the first Valencia Open 500 features six players from the ATP Top Ten: Andy Murray (3), Andy Roddick (6), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (7), Nikolay Davydenko (8), Fernando Verdasco (9) and Gilles Simon (10). Apart from Fernando Verdasco, the Spanish contingent will include all the members of the Spanish Davis Cup team that won through to the final last weekend, with Juan Carlos Ferrero (21), David Ferrer (19), Tommy Robredo (18) and Feliciano López (34) all confirming they will take part.
Other famous names include the Swede Robin Soderling (11), runner-up in the last Roland Garros, Gael Monfils (13) the Czech Tomas Berdych (16), and many others such as Paul-Henri Mathieu (27), Nicolás Almagro (30), Juan Mónaco (37), Igor Andreev (43) and Ivan Ljubicic (46).
Antonio Martínez Cascales, Tournament Director is “delighted” with the star-studded line-up: “Having players of such talent in Valencia will be a real spectacle. The fans are going to enjoy the best tennis in the best setting”, in reference to the City of Arts and Sciences and the Ágora building, where the centre court will be located.
Matches will be played on two courts, Court 1 and Centre Court. The qualifying round will be held on the first weekend of the competition and the final phase will start on Monday 2nd November. 32 players will go into the final phase. 24 directly, 4 from the qualifying round, and 4 wild cards. There will be 11 sessions (9 during day and 2 in the evening) and prize money will total 2.1 million euros.
