The Glory of Baroque, a millionaire exhibition
Seven architects, six archaelogists and 133 restorers are the protagonists of a €11,235,000 Exhibition called “The Glory of Baroque”.
The Light of the Images Valencian Region Foundation is celebrating its tenth anniversary by returning to the place it started from ten years ago when it set out on its mission to recover, restore and disseminate the Region’s historical and artistic heritage. Its new exhibition, “The Glory of the Baroque”, is set in the city of Valencia.
On this occasion, the Foundation is following in the footsteps of King James I by holding the exhibition in the city’s earliest Christian churches which were consecrated after the conquest of the city in 1238. While “Sublime”, the Foundation’s first exhibition (in 1999), was held in the Cathedral, ten years later “The Glory of the Baroque” is being celebrated in three of the ten temples that were built around the Cathedral: Saint Stephen’s Church, the Church of Saint Martin and Saint Anthony the Abbot, and Saint John of the Cross Church.
These early places of worship and Christian artwork were built on the sites of former mosques and were decorated during the 17th and 18th centuries in the Baroque style as though they were being given a new skin. The Light of the Images, thanks to its intricate restoration work, has returned the elaborate stucco, sgraffiti and vibrant giltwork in these churches to their original splendour so that visitors may appreciate them for the true decorative art gems they are.
In addition to the architectural renovation work that has been carried out, the heritage campaign has included the in situ restoration of over 2,000 square metres of decorative elements in the exhibition’s three host churches, and the recovery of 144 moveable pieces including paintings, sculptures, fabrics, gold and silverwork and documents. These pieces, together with others which are on loan from museums, private collections, monasteries and churches in other towns and cities, take the visitor on a glorious journey, “The Glory of the Baroque”.
The pieces of art that are on show in each venue are divided into three main subject areas: Valencian baroque painting, Valencian sculpture and gold and silverwork from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, and devotion to the Virgin Mary.
