Valencia gets ready to host the 33rd America’s Cup
After two and a half year battle in court, the sailing race for the America’s Cup, the oldest sporting competition in the world, will come back to sea in 2010. The 33rd edition will start on 8 February in Valencia if the defending champion Alinghi from Switzerland, and the challenger, the American BMW Oracle Racing, do not continue with its legal war.
The two contenders have already invested in the arms race about 430 million dollars to convert the America’s Cup in what has always been: a competition of the highest technological level.
In the unequal duel they will be measured with the Swiss catamaran and the American trimaran. The Alinghi yacht is as big as two tennis courts, while its rival is more robust thanks to its three hulls.
The last attraction of the U.S. team is a carbon fiber wing of more than $ 28 million created with the help of space technology that replaces the traditional flexible sail. With 60 meters long is the largest ever built by the man’s hand.
The American ship is being transported in a container from San Diego to Valencia, a journey of 32 days. The Swiss Alinghi comes from the Arab city of Ras Al Khaimah which trip to Valencia needs about 19 days.
