Nightlife in Valencia

Valencia is a city that never sleeps. There are all types of bars, clubs and pubs to choose from. The Spanish know how to have fun and this is apparent anywhere in Spain.

nightlife-in-valencia-spainSo to say that Valencia is recognized as a ‘party city’, is not surprising. Nightlife in this world-class city is simply something that must be experienced. It is the fun-loving energy of the local people and visitors themselves that brings the already vibrant bars, clubs, and beach parties to life.

Valencia presents a wide choice of things to do that suit all tastes and budgets in many leisure activities: cinema, theatre, dance and music, bars, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs. From the historic town to the beach,  there are several key clubbing and chillout areas, each one with its own style and atmosphere.  Most pubs don’t close before 3am and discos before 5am.

These are the key areas to enjoy a Valencian night experience. Take your pick.

It’s located in the historic centre of Valencia. Many of the old houses and palaces have been rebuilt and adapted as bars or pubs and restaurants. At night it becomes in one of the hotspots of the city. It offers everything from bohemian bars to cool designer palaces.

Try an Agua de Valencia – Cointreau, orange juice and champagne – in one of the bars in the Barrio del Carmen. Take a stroll down the Calle Caballeros to the Plaza San Jaime until you find something of your choice. Tourists and local people love going to Bolsería on Bolsería Street. The modern interior is all glass, mirrors and chrome, there’s a patio and a garden inside and a terrace outside. It’s full of people with lots of energy who want to dance all night.

Pepita Pulgarcita on Caballeros Street is one of the smartest. Two well-known bars worth having a drink in are Johnny Maracas (Caballeros 37) and Bolsería (Plaza del Tossal).  El Negrito, located in the square with the same name, offers a more relax atmosphere and Radio City (Santa Teresa 19) is better known for its alternative sounds and gear. The Venial (Quart 26) is one of the most popular venues for the gay community. It is a vibrant place where you’ll find spectacular shows and the best DJ’s in the national scene.

Unlike Barrio del Carmen where you can find a very mixed crowd, bars and clubs of Juan Llorens Street and its surroundings are the best place to dance with the latest Caribbean rhytms though you’ll also find commercial music as well. It’s the smallest nightlife area in the city though it’s packed with several pubs which gives the visitor a general impression of the easy-going and friendly local Valencian night.

These pubs close at 3.30 and all of them are free entry. The average age tends to be 25-30. We recommend you to have a drink in Cafe Carioca (Juan Lorrens 52), a trendy cosmopolitan venue with a pop though eclectic atmosphere. Havana-Valencia is the only nightclub after 4 am so it’s always full. Mixed and trendy crowd following the beat of pop, commercial house and Latin music.

On Erudito Orellana Street, you’ll find El Loco (Erudito Orellana 12), another great live music venue, with a great variety of styles, blues, jazz, rock and flamenco.

Another option is to head to the Aragon Avenue. This is another key area to experience a true Valencian nightlife. It is situated over the river towards the university, very close to the Valencia’s Football Club Stadium. There are streets all around the avenue with clubs, restaurants and bars. Gasoil is one of the favourite pub along the Aragon Avenue, it is always packed, but the atmosphere once you enter is great, one of the best of Valencia.

Located at a short walking distance from the Town Hall and over the river is the Plaza Canova. The streets surrounding this area, Salamanca, Conde Altea and Gran Via Marqués de Turia are packed with select bars and restaurants. The offer of international cuisine is very diverse, ranging from Argentine, Mexican, Indian, Colombian, Peruvian, Thai, Italian, Chinese and Japanese restaurants. We recommend you a a visit to one of the best Argentinian restaurants, Rincón Gaucho (51 Conde Altea Street), before going to some pubs. It has been during more than twenty years offering a cozy place where you can taste large delicious beef tenderloin, a real delight.

One of the top nightclubs in this area is called Las Animas (31 Calle del Pizarro).  Its main attractions is without a doubt its decor. It’s made out to look like the set of a horror film with the action taking place in the 19th century. The thick red curtains hanging from the walls, mirrors all over the place and much more all add to this effect. The other appeal here is the live music. From Sunday to Tuesday, it’s a piano bar, and on Wednesday night’s they have live jazz sessions. The rest of the week (Thursday to Saturday), it’s a good place to come for a drink and dance to the music if you can make room for yourself.

In summer, the emphasis switches to the beach, Playa de Malvarrosa. The cooling night breezes blowing in from the sea are especially welcome. Everyone from teens to 40-somethings congregate around open-air bars. The bars play music, often have dance floors, and are open from late May to September.  Trendy bars such as Caballito de Mar, offer live performances and in Floridita you can taste the best mojitos and daiquiris.

If you are after a more stylish experience go to Las Animas Puerto. It is not just a nightclub, but a special place where guests can dine at 10 pm, start listening to chill out music until they find dancing under the famous disco ball. There are also open bars with dance patios ideal for the hot summer days due to the cool breeze of the air at night. This is where mostly the people start their night before they head to the Barrio del Carmen, the most popular night spot in Valencia.
